PC Maintenance Checklist: Keep Your Computer Healthy

A simple weekly, monthly and yearly routine that keeps your computer fast, secure and reliable.

Why maintenance pays off

Most computer problems build up slowly: updates pile up, storage fills, dust collects and unused programs accumulate. A few minutes of routine care prevents slowdowns, crashes and security problems, and helps your computer last longer.

Every week

  • Restart your computer, rather than only putting it to sleep. Many updates finish only after a restart.
  • Install pending updates for the operating system and browser.
  • Make sure your backup ran.
  • Empty the downloads folder of things you no longer need.

Every month

  • Check free space: keep at least 10–20% of your drive free. Use Storage settings on Windows or Storage in System Settings on a Mac to find large files.
  • Uninstall programs you don't use, especially toolbars and trial software.
  • Review startup apps: on Windows, open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) → Startup apps; on a Mac, System Settings → General → Login Items.
  • Update your other software: PDF readers, office apps, drivers.
  • Run a full security scan.
  • Review browser extensions and remove ones you don't recognise.

Every year

  • Clean dust from vents and fans, gently, with the computer off and unplugged. Compressed air in short bursts works well for desktops.
  • Check your drive's health. Many manufacturers provide a free tool, and unusual clicking noises are a warning sign.
  • Test restoring files from your backup.
  • Review accounts and passwords; remove old user accounts.
  • Check that your operating system version is still supported with security updates.

Good everyday habits

  • Keep laptops on hard, flat surfaces. Beds and cushions block air vents.
  • Use a surge protector, especially for desktops.
  • Shut down properly rather than holding the power button.
  • Keep drinks away from keyboards.
  • Don't ignore warning signs like new noises, heat, crashes or sudden slowness.
